Frequently Asked Questions
Georgetown Endodontics typically works on a referral basis from your general dentist or dental specialist. If your dentist has identified the need for root canal therapy, retreatment, or endodontic surgery, they can submit a referral form to our office. You are also welcome to contact us directly at (289) 891-6333 or [email protected] to discuss your situation.
An endodontist is a dental specialist with additional years of post-graduate training focused on diagnosing tooth pain and treating diseases of the dental pulp โ most commonly through root canal therapy.
Root canal therapy at Georgetown Endodontics is performed under local anesthesia, ensuring you remain comfortable throughout the procedure. Most patients report that the treatment feels similar to getting a routine filling. After the procedure, mild discomfort may last one to two weeks, which is typically manageable with over-the-counter pain relief. There are no restrictions on driving or returning to work following your appointment.
Most patients are referred by their general dentist, though the clinic accepts patients who contact them directly as well.
We recommend eating a meal before your appointment. Take 400mg of ibuprofen one hour prior to your visit, continue all regular medications as prescribed, and arrange antibiotic premedication if your physician has recommended it for dental procedures. If you have any questions about preparation, call our office at (289) 891-6333 and we will guide you through the process.
Retreatment is performed when a previously root-canalled tooth has become re-infected or healed incompletely. The endodontist reopens the tooth, removes the previous filling material, and re-treats the canals.
After your root canal, a temporary restoration will be placed in your tooth. It is important to follow up with your regular dentist to have a permanent crown or restoration placed, as this protects the treated tooth from fracture and reinfection. Dr. Ashoo is available for consultation at all times if you experience any issues following your treatment.
An apicoectomy is a surgical procedure where the tip of the tooth root is removed along with surrounding infected tissue, used when root canal therapy alone cannot eliminate an infection.
Endodontic retreatment is a second root canal procedure performed when a tooth that was previously treated fails to heal properly, or when new infection or pain develops months or years after the original treatment. Common reasons include missed canals, a new cavity, or breakdown of the original filling material. Georgetown Endodontics re-enters the tooth, removes the previous filling material, thoroughly cleans and shapes the canals, and re-seals them to give the tooth the best chance of long-term survival.
Yes. Urgent endodontic appointments are available for patients with acute dental pain.
An apicoectomy, or root-end surgery, is a minor surgical procedure in which the tip of the tooth's root is accessed directly through the gum to remove infection, identify tiny fractures or undetectable canals, and seal the root end. It is recommended when non-surgical root canal therapy has not resolved the infection or when surgery provides a better diagnostic and treatment opportunity than retreatment alone.
